SAVE MONEY GROCERIES

Have you been trying to save, but your grocery bill always comes out higher than expected? Groceries are one of the sneakiest ways money can slip through your fingers without realizing it.

You are not alone! I am about to give you some tips that will lower your grocery bill, eat yummy foods, and finally be able to save.

Ready to take control of your grocery spending? Let’s break it down step-by-step:

1. Why a Grocery Budget Matters

Food is a necessity! Because it is necessary, it is very easy not to have a system in place when grocery shopping leads you to overspend. The worst part is when your grocery bill is super high, and you get home and try to cook to find out that you don’t have everything you need for your craving. This is often “fixed” by going out again, shopping for even more ingredients, or picking up take-out.

A grocery budget matters because it helps you:

  • Prevent impulse buying
  • Create consistency in your spending
  • Prioritize other financial goals like saving or paying off debt

A grocery budget is not about restriction. It is about being intentional. You get to purchase the foods you enjoy eating while saving money to put towards your money goals.

2. How to Calculate Your Grocery Budget

It’s time to make calculations. Let’s start by tracking what you currently spend on groceries for the month. This will help you set a realistic grocery budget. Once you have a rough idea, ask yourself:

What is a reasonable amount to spend on groceries based on your income?

Are there areas where you can cut back without sacrificing essentials?

A general rule of thumb is to allocate 10-15% of your monthly income toward groceries, but this can vary depending on household size and dietary needs.

When I started to save for my dream destination wedding in Costa Rica, my husband and I spent $300 a month on groceries in San Francisco. After the wedding, we raised our budget to $400 a month for groceries and enjoyed eating at home a bit more.

Then, when we raised our income, we allowed ourselves to spend $650 a month on groceries, and we could buy red meat! But geez, red meat increases that grocery bill! So, it is definitely a treat when we do purchase it.

3. Tips to Stick to a Grocery Budget

Give yourself grace in the beginning as you adjust.

Here are a few tips that can help:

  • Use cash or a separate debit card for groceries. Once that money is gone, it is gone.
  • Create a list before going to the store. This will help you stick to it.
  • Limit grocery trips. Fewer trips mean fewer opportunities to overspend.
  • Never go to the store hungry! You are most likely going to overspend because everything looks delicious when starving.

Your trips to the grocery store do not have to be perfect, and that is okay! Try to stick to a budget as much as possible.

4. Plan Your Meals Like a Pro

If you have never done meal planning, do not panic; it is not that difficult! However, it will be the key to saving money on your next grocery bill.

Planning meals helps you:

  • Avoid food waste. No more throwing out that forgotten produce or food you did not like in the fridge. (I’m guilty! Oooppss)
  • Buy only what you need. No extra spending.
  • Save time. No more last-minute runs to the store because you forgot one ingredient for dinner.

The favorite meals you and your family liked, start taking notes and saving them so that you can have them on repeat. This way, you will not think of new recipes all the time.

5. Avoid Common Grocery

Spending Mistakes. Let’s address a few of the mistakes that you can start avoiding:

  • Shopping without a list. Get clear on cravings that you already have and create a yummy list.
  • Shopping for “deals” you do not need. If it’s not on your list, you do not need it.
  • Buying in bulk without a plan. Yes, you will save money, but if you do not plan to use it, you may not be able to consume it before it expires.
  • Shopping when hungry. I’m adding it here again because this one is so common. You will shop with your stomach, lol.

6. Celebrate Small Wins

Do not try to do everything perfectly or wait until you hit a significant milestone to celebrate all your hard work. Celebrate and acknowledge all the small wins you experience because every small win adds up to a significant financial goal.

Celebrating your small wins makes you more likely to stay consistent and motivated to keep going. Soon, you will realize you have made a lifestyle change. Celebrate the small wins!

7. How Grocery Savings Impact Your Financial Goals

The money you save on groceries is not just about saving. It is about redirecting those dollars to your financial goals.

Want to pay debt faster? That extra $50 a month can go toward your credit card balance.
Building an emergency fund? Every dollar saved adds up, giving you more freedom.
Want to take a vacation? Grocery savings can help you get there without feeling deprived.

Lowering your grocery bill is not about cutting expenses but creating financial flexibility and freedom.

Being strategic with your grocery shopping will help you eat yummier foods and save money to reach your next financial goal.

You got this!
