The Emotional Side of Money: Why Your Feelings Matter More Than You Think

When it comes to personal finance, we often focus on the numbers. Whether it’s saving, paying off debt, or finally contributing to that ROTH IRA, it can feel like all the pieces are in front of us, but somehow, we’re stuck. We know what steps to take, but for some reason, we’re not taking them.

Does this sound familiar?

If so, you’re not alone. Many of us overlook a key factor when it comes to managing our finances: our feelings about money. And trust me, your feelings about money matter more than you might realize.

Why You’re Not Taking Action With Your Finances

Let’s say you know how to budget and have a plan to pay off debt, but time keeps passing, and you’re not making the progress you hoped for.

What’s going on? Well, it’s likely because you’re only focusing on the numbers and ignoring the emotional side of money.

Perhaps you don’t feel safe or confident when it comes to managing your money. Maybe you don’t fully understand how a ROTH IRA works, so the idea of investing just doesn’t excite you. Or you might be carrying around the fear of losing your money, which makes it hard to save in a High Yield Savings Account or invest.

You may not believe that being debt-free, saving, and investing so you can relax is possible for you! You have simply never seen it done in your family before.

Money Trauma and Emotional Blockages

Many of us have experienced moments when money felt scarce or out of reach. For example, growing up in a low-income household could leave lasting emotional scars. Money trauma is real, and it often shows up as fear—fear of not having enough, fear of losing what you have, or even fear of success.

If you have debt but resist paying it down aggressively because you feel like you “need the money,” this could be rooted in past experiences of lack or financial instability. The fear of not having money often triggers memories of extreme outcomes, like losing your home, dealing with emergencies, or struggling to put food on the table.

Even if these outcomes are no longer part of your reality, their emotional weight can still influence how you manage money today.

Why It’s So Hard to Take Financial Action

It’s important to recognize that many of us have inherited our parents’ money beliefs and fears. Yikes! If you grew up seeing your parents stress over bills, worry about keeping the lights on, or struggle to put food on the table, those feelings may have been passed down to you. Even if your financial situation is different today, those early experiences can still shape your emotional relationship with money.

This is why the way you feel about money matters.

Financial confidence isn’t just about knowing how to create a budget or open a retirement account—it’s about understanding your money story, unpacking past trauma, and reshaping your feelings about money. Money is not all about the numbers.

How to Address Your Feelings About Money

When you work on your finances, knowing that your feelings matter is important.

Here’s how you can start shifting your mindset around money:

  • Recognize your emotions: When you find yourself stuck or avoiding financial tasks, take a moment to ask yourself how you’re feeling. Are you anxious? Fearful? Overwhelmed? Identifying these emotions is the first step in addressing them.
  • Understand your money story: Think about your experiences growing up. Did your family struggle with money? Did they constantly worry about bills? Understanding how these experiences have shaped your relationship with money can help you break free from old patterns.
  • Educate yourself: The more you understand how financial tools like ROTH IRAs or investment accounts work, the more confident you’ll feel. Knowledge is power, and the more you know, the less likely you are to be held back by fear.
