Are you thinking beyond your debt?
It can be hard to see beyond the monthly payments, high interest, and emotional toll when deep in debt. You are likely only thinking about your debt and not knowing where your money is going because you need a plan that works for you.
Let’s say your debt will take two years to pay off, but that does not mean you stop living your life for two years! Instead, you create a plan that works for you to pay off debt and know where your money is going. Thinking beyond your debt is key to achieving long-term financial stability and building the life you are excited to wake up to every day.
Here’s how you can shift your mindset and plan beyond your debt to a more financially secure and aligned lifestyle:
Understanding Your Debt
The first step in thinking beyond your debt is to understand it.
You do not have to think about your debt 24/7; let’s take it out of your head and onto paper. List all your debts, including credit cards, student loans, personal loans, and other obligations. Knowing exactly what you owe, the interest rates and due dates will give you a clear picture of your financial situation. This clarity is essential to manage and plan for your finances.
Setting Financial Goals
One of the best ways to start thinking beyond your debt is to set clear, achievable financial goals. Do not allow your current financial situation to cloud your dreams. If money was not an issue, what would you like to achieve? These could include:
- Building an Emergency Fund: Creating a safety net in case of an emergency and avoiding further debt.
- Saving for specific goals: The earlier you start planning, the less stressful it is to reach your goal. You are giving yourself time.
- Investing: Growing your money without you working extremely hard for it is the dream! However, it is not only a dream; providing long-term financial security through investing is possible.
Those financial goals are helpful, but if you are just starting, reframing those financial goals to “Fun Whys” will ensure you stay on track. Hear me out. Although people know saving is necessary, they will likely try but fail because they have other priorities.
To ensure you stay on track to meet your financial goals, here is how to reframe them:
What would building an emergency fund help you do? What is the specific goal for the savings? At what age do you want to retire, and what do you want your life to look like?
This could involve traveling for a month after a layoff and then returning to apply for new career opportunities. Perhaps you are saving to finally have a kitchen that brings you joy to cook in. Perhaps you have never seen your family members retire comfortably, and you want to move out of a busy city to a more outdoorsy area or travel all over Italy.
See how exciting that sounds?
You will stay on track to meet your financial goals because you know what investing and having an emergency fund means. Always ask yourself, what would meeting your financial goal help you do? You shift your focus from paying off debt to creating a sustainable financial future that allows you to have fun and play!
Budgeting for Success
Now that you know where you are headed, you need a roadmap. A well-planned budget is your roadmap to achieving your financial goals. Subtract your expenses, debt, and goal amounts from your income. If your income does not allow you to meet your goals by a specific time frame you want, you must increase your income. There is no right or wrong way to budget.
Remember, a budget is not about restriction; it’s about making informed decisions that align with your financial goals. Your budget allows you to say “yes” to the things that you want. Your budget takes you to your dream life!
Increasing Your Income
You might have heard that cutting expenses is a way to find more money in your budget. While cutting expenses is one way to send more to debt, increasing your income can accelerate your progress.
Consider increasing your salary by starting a side hustle, freelance, or part-time job. Do not underestimate the power of negotiating your current salary, too! Take note of your wins at the company and the value you bring to the team, and start having this conversation before your next review. Extra income can be directed towards debt repayment, savings, or investments, helping you achieve your financial goals faster.
Exploring Debt Repayment Strategies
You can use several debt repayment strategies to pay off your debt faster and more efficiently. Two popular methods are:
- Avalanche method: Organize your debt from a high to a low interest rate. Send extra payments to the highest-interest debt to pay it off first and make minimum monthly payments to the rest of the debt. When you are done, tackle the highest interest rate until all debt is paid off.
The avalanche method makes sense mathematically. If you are disciplined, consistent, and okay not seeing results fast, choose this method.
- Snowball method: Organize your debt from the lowest balance to the highest balance owed. Send extra payments to the lowest balance to pay it off first and make minimum monthly payments to the rest of the debt. When you are done, tackle the next lowest balance owed until all debt is paid off.
The snowball method helps you if you need to see that you are making progress, crossing debts first to stay motivated and build momentum. It is okay to choose this option because money is emotional, and you may need evidence that you can pay off the debt.
Now that you have chosen a method to pay off debt, you have a plan of action you can take every month without constantly thinking about it.
Here is the truth: paying debt off will take time, depending on how much money you owe.
Planning for the Future
Once you’ve paid off your debt, it’s time to start planning for the future. Similarly to your Fun Whys explained above, clarify how you want your future to look.
You are in control.
How will you build your dream life?
Thinking beyond your debt means planning for a future where your finances work for you, not against you.
Thinking beyond your debt is about shifting your mindset from managing debt to building your dream life. Remember, financial freedom is not just about being debt-free; it’s about creating a sustainable and prosperous future.
My client sent me a reel showing a woman traveling the world with her baby. She said, “I like the idea of traveling with my family like this, but I’m not sure how realistic it is.”
My response: Of course, it is realistic and possible!!!
Because it is possible to become a nomad with her baby! She wants to slow down her life and feel more joyful.
It is crucial to think beyond stress and debt. Thinking beyond debt allows you to build the life you want for yourself despite not seeing it done in your family. You are the creator of your life.
